WASHINGTON — A D.C. event planning company is launching a new way for singles to meet people while stay at home orders are in place.

On July 11, , a well-dressed and determined young woman walked into the offices of one of Chicago’s better-known domestic lawyers. Juanita Vanoy had been attorney-shopping for weeks. Twenty-nine years old and a mid-level office worker, she was romantically involved with a very big sports celebrity–and now she had a very big problem.

They had been dating since mid and Juanita thought they’d be planning a wedding by now. Jordan had proposed to her the preceding New Year’s Eve at a fancy downtown restaurant, but then things stalled. Even though she was five months pregnant, the lawyer found her without anger or bitterness–just resolute.

She knew what she had to do. She was not the least bit indecisive. Vanoy hired Minton that Midwestern summer day, and directed the lawyer to pursue a paternity suit against the most famous athlete in Chicago–and soon, the world. Indeed, anyone who knows Juanita Jordan will tell you that she has never been intimidated by Michael Jordan, never blinded by the basketball legend’s money and fame–and that she always knew where she stood in the game. She was a hardworking and ambitious woman before she met him, raised as the fifth of six girls on the South Side–and her friends say she has never forgotten where she came from.

Now, after 12 years of marriage, three children and a high life of big houses and private jets, Juanita Jordan, 42, exits the relationship the same way she entered it–with eyes wide open and hard-nosed lawyers pursuing Michael Jordan. The news that the basketball legend was being dumped by his wife was at once stunning and predictable, say those who know them.

I have friends who are doctors and lawyers that struggle to get cute chicks, and I have friends who are less attractive dee-jays, club promoters and bartenders who pull 8s and 9s on the regular. Go figure. As far as the dating “scene,” I will say this. The women here meet, on average, more accomplished than women in other cities.

More Events, more law degrees, higher speed, etc. Because they are “successful,” they think they are worth more on the open market than a cute waitress at Applebee’s. They think to themselves: Women date UP. So the guy who realistically may be their equal the speed with the regular job, regular apartment and regular car is put on the backburner for the guy who offers even MORE than what they have. They don’t realize that men, within reason, view an 8 who’s a free-grade teacher and an 8 who’s a Wharton MBA exactly the same.

Dating right now raises a new set of concerns. And a new kind of dealbreaker.

The New York Times demoted a reporter who acknowledged a romantic relationship with a Senate staffer who is suspected of leaking information to journalists. Times editor Dean Baquet said Tuesday he would reassign the reporter, Ali Watkins from the paper’s Washington bureau to New York in the wake of revelations that she had been involved with James Wolfe, the former head of security for the Senate Intelligence Committee. Watkins covered the committee for a number of publications, although not the Times.

Wolfe was indicted on June 7 for allegedly making false statements to FBI investigators about his contacts with reporters, including Watkins, during their investigation of leaks from the committee. Wolfe has pleaded not guilty and denies giving classified information to reporters; Watkins hasn’t been charged with any crime. The episode has alarmed some press organizations because of the manner in which Watkins’ relationship with Wolfe was uncovered – via investigators’ secret seizure of her phone and email records, which showed extensive contacts between Watkins and Wolfe over a three-year period starting in late The aggressive tactic has drawn criticism, including from Baquet on Tuesday, because it appears to be a government effort to intimidate reporters and interfere with legitimate newsgathering efforts while rooting out the source of leaks.

At the same time, the disclosure of Watkins’ relationship with Wolfe – which ended in , before she joined the Times – has thrust the Times into the awkward position of investigating one of its own journalists for possible ethical violations. Most news organizations regard a romantic, familial or financial relationship between its journalists and their sources as a gross breach of ethical conduct. Watkins, 26, has denied that Wolfe was a source in her reporting on national security while she worked for McClatchy, BuzzFeed, Huffington Post and Politico.

She disclosed her relationship with Wolfe to these publications in varying degrees of detail, according to the Times. She sometimes cited Wolfe by name and position, and other times she didn’t. She told Times editors in Washington about the relationship when she joined the paper, but they apparently didn’t tell senior editors in New York about it.

A secondary issue for the Times was Watkins’ failure to tell her editors for nearly four months that federal prosecutors had seized her records as part of their investigation.

Break the Cycle

Even during a pandemic, singles have a natural desire to want to find that special someone. Dating is intimidating, even in good times. Doing so virtually can ease nerves and allow time to get to know someone before meeting up.

Many of my friends experienced some variation of this rishta-proposal process. My husband and I, for example, had a fusion of the traditional and modern. We were introduced by a mutual family friend, my mother was present when we first met, but after that we were left to figure things out on our own, with the understanding that our end goal was marriage. We were engaged within six months. Seventeen years and a couple kids later, the process worked for us.

Of course, that was in ancient times.
